St. Clair County was established on November 20, 1818 by the Alabama Territory. The original county seat was incorporated and named “Ashville” in honor of John Ash. In 1907 a second county seat was established in Pell City because of the difficulty of the southern residents in crossing Backbone Mountain.
Because of a series of dams on the Coosa River, St. Clair County is home to Logan Martin Land & Neely Henry Lake. Horse Pens 40, a private outdoor park on top of Chandler Mountain, is located in the northern part of the county.
