Blount County

Blount County was created by the Alabama Territorial Legislature and was named for Governor Willie Blount of Tennessee.  It lies in the northeastern quadrant of the state and is bordered by Cullman, Marshall, Etowah, Jefferson, Walker, and St. Clair Counties.  

Blount County has been dubbed the “Covered Bridge Capital of Alabama” since it has more historic covered bridges standing within a single county than any other in the state – with earlier covered bridges known of.

Schools

There are two main public school systems in Blount County: Oneonta City Schools and Blount County Schools.   Wallace State Community College has a campus located in Oneonta.  Blount County is centrally located between Birmingham and Huntsville providing several opportunities to attend a major university including UAB & UAH.  

Land Size

The County contains 651 square miles, 645 in land and 6 in water.  The County is served by several major highways:  I-65,U.S. Highway 278,  and 231 and States highways 67, 75, 79, 132, and 160.

Population

The County has an estimated population of 57,322. The County seat of Oneonta has a population of 6,567 and is the counties largest. 

Governed

Blount County is governed by the Blount County Commission, consisting of five members,  four are Commissioners and the fifth is the Chairman.  The county’s probate judge is elected countywide and by default holds the dual role as Commission Chairman.  It is headquartered at the county courthouse in Oneonta.

Churches

There are over 150 churches in the County, representing faiths of all denominations.

Hospital

St. Vincent’s Blount, the only hospital in Blount County, is licensed for 25 beds.  Hospital services include med/surg and ICU units, a 24/7 emergency room, and inpatient and outpatient surgical services, including a GI lab.
