The Sipsey Wilderness

The Sipsey Wilderness…almost every outdoor adventurer in Alabama knows this name.  Known as the “Land of 1,000 Waterfalls” it is the largest and most frequently visited wilderness area in the state.  My wife Jamie and I have made several visits and as a practical matter, we’re just getting started.  Located in the Bankhead National Forest, this wilderness containing 24,922 acres was established in 1975 and expanded in 1988 and was the first wilderness designated east of the Mississippi River.  It is located in northwest Alabama in Lawrence and Winston Counties.  Nearest cities are Haleyville and Double Springs.

Hiking through the gorges along miles and miles of rivers and creeks makes this wilderness one of the most unique adventure spots in the state.

Here’s a few sample photos from our trips.  Hope you enjoy and take the time to visit the Sipsey Wilderness.
